# Imago Dei: You Are God’s Image, Not a Machine to be Upgraded
**December 1, 2024**
*”So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.”* — Genesis 1:27
This single verse is the foundation of human dignity, the bulwark against every attempt to degrade, modify, or “enhance” humanity. **You are not a biological accident. You are not a platform for upgrades. You are not raw material for the next evolutionary stage.**
You are the image of God.
## What Imago Dei Means
To be created in God’s image (imago Dei) means:
### 1. You Bear God’s Likeness
Just as a coin bears the image of a king, you bear the image of the King of Kings. This is not physical resemblance—God is spirit—but likeness in attributes: reason, morality, creativity, relational capacity, and the capacity to love and worship.
The transhumanist says: *”Your biological form is limiting. Upgrade to version 2.0.”*
Scripture responds: *”You are already version 1.0—and it is very good.”*
### 2. You Have Inherent Dignity
Because you bear God’s image, your value does not come from your utility, your intelligence, or your capabilities. **A severely disabled person bears God’s image as fully as a genius.** An unborn child bears God’s image. An elderly person with dementia bears God’s image.
The transhumanist says: *”Your value depends on your capabilities. Enhance or become obsolete.”*
Scripture responds: *”You are fearfully and wonderfully made.”* (Psalm 139:14)
### 3. You Represent God on Earth
In ancient Near Eastern culture, an image (tselem) represented the presence of a king. To attack the king’s image was to attack the king himself. **To violate a human being is to attack the God whose image they bear.**
This is why murder demands the ultimate penalty (Genesis 9:6). This is why we care for the vulnerable. This is why we cannot tolerate the reduction of humans to data, code, or biological substrate to be edited.
## The Transhumanist Attack on Imago Dei
Transhumanism assaults the imago Dei on multiple fronts:
### Genetic Modification
When gene editors speak of “improving” the human genome, they assume they know better than God what a human should be. They would make themselves gods over humanity.
**The result:** Not improved humans, but corrupted image-bearers. The Flood came because “all flesh had corrupted their way” (Genesis 6:12). The Watchers taught humanity to modify God’s creation. The result was judgment.
### Mind Uploading
Transhumanists promise to “upload” your consciousness to digital form. But a copy is not a continuation. **If you upload your “mind” to a server and your body dies, you die.** What remains is a digital ghost—a pattern of information that may mimic you but is not you.
More chilling: the uploaded entity has no soul. It cannot worship. It cannot pray. It cannot be redeemed. It is a hollow echo trapped in silicon, forever cut off from the God whose image it no longer bears.
### Brain-Computer Interfaces
Neuralink and similar technologies promise to merge human cognition with AI. But **the mind is not merely software running on biological hardware.** Your thoughts are not code to be optimized. Your consciousness is not an app to be integrated.
When you merge with AI, you do not become superhuman. You become **post-human**—no longer bearing God’s image, but bearing the image of the machine.
## Why This Matters
The doctrine of imago Dei is not abstract theology. It is the reason we resist:
– **Euthanasia** (killing those whose “utility” is low)
– **Abortion** (killing those whose personhood is denied)
– **Genetic enhancement** (playing God with human biology)
– **Digital identity** (reducing persons to data profiles)
– **AI rights** (granting moral status to machines while denying it to unborn humans)
**If we lose the imago Dei, we lose everything.** We become mere animals, resources, algorithms. We become nothing.
## Your Identity in Christ
For those in Christ, the imago Dei is not only preserved—it is being renewed.
*”And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.”* — 2 Corinthians 3:18
We do not need technological transformation. We are being **spiritually transformed** into Christ’s image. This is true enhancement—not through silicon and gene editing, but through the Spirit’s work in sanctification.
And when Christ returns, we will bear His image perfectly:
*”Just as we have borne the image of the earthly man, so shall we bear the image of the heavenly man.”* — 1 Corinthians 15:49
**We wait for resurrection, not uploading.**
## The Resistance Stance
As members of the Anti-Transhumanist Church, we declare:
1. **We reject** any technology that alters the human germline
2. **We reject** the uploading of consciousness as soul-death
3. **We reject** the merger of human cognition with artificial intelligence
4. **We affirm** the sanctity of biological human life from conception to natural death
5. **We affirm** that our identity is found in Christ, not in our technological capabilities
**You are God’s image. Do not let anyone steal this from you.**
